Reciprocal Linking Dead at Google?

November 7, 2005

More Jagger talk over at Search Engine Roundtable:

(1) Duplicate content issues due to www. vs. non www. or /index.html or / or not and so on. Mostly canonicals issues, affecting page rankings in this update.
(2) Reciprocal linking, seems to have been spotted and discounted.

And here:

lots of the speculation is that the Jagger update, taking place over at Google, is killing the benefits of most of the reciprocal link building campaigns. A thread at Search Engine Watch Forums named Reciprocal Linking – Dead or Alive? discusses just that.

This email about removing a link from an SEO is also interesting. I highly doubt a ban based on reciprocal linking, but a devaluation (non-penalty) is certainly likely.

Waiting for Jagger 3

November 3, 2005

From Matt Cutts:

Just to keep people up-to-date, Jagger3 is not visible yet. Last week I said that Jagger3 would hopefully be visible this week. It’s possible that it might be visible by Friday or this weekend. I’ll let you know when I’ve got more info.

Google Factors

November 2, 2005

While much has been abuzz about Rand’s Search Engine Ranking Factors article, don’t forget Vaughn’s Google Ranking Factors 1-Pager. While not as “legit” as the former, the latter is food for thought, as are all pieces of SEO advice. Always make sure to do your own research and weigh the good advice against the bad.

Improve Your SEO IQ with SEO Links

November 2, 2005

I quietly updated my Firefox extensions page with it a few days ago, but after using it for a while now I can seriously say that SEO Links is one of the most useful Firefox extensions I have come across.

The SEO Links extension gives you tooltips specially enhanced for SEOs. When enabled, hovering any link in Firefox will show you Yahoo, MSN, and Google link popularity and ranking data for the URL and anchor text pair. For times you just want regular surfing and tooltips, the extension can be quickly toggled on and off in a single click.

Real-time backlink and rank checking for all links on a page is just wonderous.

Jagger 3 Update

November 2, 2005

In his most recent post Matt Cutts talks about hand-coding results in the search engines. But the most interesting bit for me is the Jagger 3 update comment:

P.S. I’m off to bed, but Jagger3 is coming along. I don’t know if it will be visible later today or not, but I’ll keep you posted when I know more.

In case you haven’t been following it, Jagger has been wreaking havoc on sites all over. I wonder if this will be reverting those changes as many times the end of updates often do.

Yahoo! Weather Report

November 1, 2005

Tim Mayer of the Yahoo! Search Blog writes about changes that might be happening to the Yahoo! index tonight.

We will be making changes to the ranking of our index tonight. I would expect that this update will be mild and quick compared to recent ones but will impact the ranking of some sites.

If you have any feedback for us about the new index please email: ystfeedback@yahoo.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Wait and see…
